Adding osCommerce products

How to add your products
to osCommerce shopping cart

Your osCommerce shopping cart comes pre-filled with a number of sample products. For the shopping cart to function properly, it is necessary to have at least some products in the database.

Therefore, DO NOT start by deleting any products. Please follow these steps:

Modify the existing list of manufacturers first

  1. Log into your osCommerce shopping cart as an administrator

  2. Click on the Catalog heading

  3. Click on Manufacturers

  4. Without deleting any of the records, modify the existing manufacturers: select a manufacturer, click on the Edit button

  5. Edit the manufacturer's name

  6. Leave the manufacturer's URL list empty

  7. Click on the Browse button to supply the manufacturer's image. Keep the image small. 57x40 pixels is recommended - try not to go over 100x57 pixels.

  8. Click on the Save button

  9. If you need to add new manufacturers to the list, use the Insert button.

Important note: for the manufacturers' images we recommend you use single-pixel framed opaque JPG, GIF or PNG images.

Modify the categories

  1. Click on Catalog / Categories/Products

  2. Without deleting any categories, edit the existing category names

  3. If you are running multi-language website, fill-in the entries for additional languages

  4. Browse to a local folder to select the category image: 57x40 pixels is recommended - try not to go over 100x57 pixels.

  5. Use the Sort Order to control the display sequence: 0 will be displayed first.

  6. Click on the Save button

  7. If necessary, set the sub-categories. We recommend Category-Product or Category-Subcategory-Product structures: any deeper and it becomes somewhat hard for your visitors to navigate the website.

Set up the products

  1. Place the products in your Categories and Subcategories
  2. Net/Gross price: for businesses based in Australia, the simplest thing to do is to specify that all prices include GST and make the Net and the Gross price equal.
