Animator Professional
Frequently Asked Questions

File formats

Can I create animations/videos/images/sounds in the *** format?
Which animation/video/image/sound format should I use?

Animator is most commonly used to create animated gif, avi and mpeg. It supports 40+ file formats. Click here to see if your format is supported, and what purpose is each of the formats good for.

Can I convert my animation/video/image/sound from one format to another?

You can change format, size, and color resolution of many images in one go.
You can also convert multiple audio / animation / video files from one format to another and at the same time modify sound and video settings, if needed. Most popular conversions are: avi2mpeg, mpeg2avi, gif2avi, tif2avi, ac32mp3, wav2mp3, and mp32wav.
Click here for the full list of supported formats and conversions.

Can I add 2 or more animations / videos / sound files together into one big file?

Yes. You can create one video file consisting of two or more smaller videos, or create an audio file consisting of two or more audio files, or add multiple sound files to a video file.

I would like to make few changes before converting avi to mpeg. How can I do that?

1. Select Extract Images from AVI from the menu
2. Make sure Start a New Animation is checked
3. Click on Do It! to extract the images
4. Change frame replication, insert new images, etc
5. Save as mpeg.

Automation

How do I use Animator from the command line or another application (via INI file)?

Have a look at Demo.ini in the Images folder. It gives you detailed description of all the entries you have to fill in. Then:

  • Have your program create an INI (for example MyAnim.ini) file and write all the necessary entries.
  • Call Antechinus Animator and pass the name of the INI file, for example: AnimPro.exe c:\MyAnim.ini
  • The Animator will open up, create the animation and close down.

General questions

Can my animation have a transparent background color?

For animated gif, simply select the transparent color.
Mpeg
files do not support transparency.
For avi files, transparency is set by the codec and not all the codecs support it. We suggest using Intel Indeo for the purpose (for example Intel Indeo video 5.04):

  • Select Options/AVI Settings
  • Select Intel Indeo video
  • Click on Configure
  • Set transparency to "First frame analysis".

Please note that you might have to download Intel codecs if you don't have them installed on your machine.

I cannot extract images/sound from the avi I made with my digital camera...
Converting from avi to mpeg fails...

This means that Animator could not find the codec used to compress your avi. Most digital cameras use vids:MJPG codec - perhaps it is included with your digital camera software. If not, please use Google below to search for vids:MJPG. Try extracting/converting after you have installed the codec.

Google

When I run the Animator, I cannot scroll to see more than 10 image frames...

It almost never happens, but on few computers the Image/Frame table is initially not properly resized. Please move the mouse between "Image" and "Frame" (the cursor changes to double arrow), click and and drag to the left until the scroll bar pops into view. You should now be able to see all the images, reorder them, insert new ones etc.

Can Antechinus Animator be used to take an existing AVI movie clip (with sound) and reduce its frame rate from 5 frames/sec to 1 frame/second, while still retaining the sound track?

To do this, extract the images, extract the sound, then reassemble them in a new AVI with different frame rate.

Can Animator run on Mac or Linux?

Animator works on Windows 95/98/2000Me/NT3.x/NT4.x/2000Pro/XP/Server 2003/Vista/Windows 7. It does not run natively on Mac or Unix, but it has been tested to work fine on Mac under Windows emulation.
